I agree with you completely here Durram... And as an engineer in the
industrial battery and charger market (23 yrs) take my word for it..
There are, are there not, different styles of lead-acid battery,
though ? While normal vehicle batteries don't take at all kindly to
deep discharge and prefer to remain on constant rapid/trickle charge
as they are in vehicles, there are also "leisure" batteries usually
aimed at the caravan/accessory market where it is almost inevitable
that slowish discharge to nearly empty will occur without permanent
damage. It would seem sensible for trolley batteries to be of a
similar design to those.
I'm no expert, mind !
Yes (Roughly) there are the two types.. Those that like to remain fully charged and never get discharged ie automotive and the cyclic traction/leisure type. However still not really a good idea to discharge them to zero state especially the gel/ sla (sealed lead acid) types.. Modern chargers are more than capable of deciding the correct returnable capacity required by the battery.. Years ago chargers would run for a fixed time regardless to the amount of discharge. Luckily in later years this has been improved..
We wont go down the "Memory effect" wives tales or I will be typing all night..
