If I change to a different power adapter, it sort of has the same problem but much worse, but then the other power adapter might not be suitable. It's one of those universal jobbies.

Did you take the power adapter with you to work or did you use one that was at work?

If I plug Mrs Joe's old monitor into my computer, it doesn't work at all except for five seconds during boot-up, but Mrs Joe's monitor is ten thousand years old and hasn't been used since well before she went away, just gathering dust in the store-room since then, so that's probably fucked anyway.

That's probably because that monitor doesn't support the screen resolution you've got your computer set to. Try setting the resolution to 640 x 480 in the display settings using your duff monitor and then plug Mrs Joes monitor back in. If it works try increasing the resolution in steps until it stops working again. Windows should do the 'test the resolution for 15 seconds' thingy when you change the resolution so it will go back to the previous setting if it doesn't work, IYSWIM.
