As far as I remember Fifa backed Celtic, however there was NO
written contract. He verbally agreed to re-join Celtic, but was
persuaded to join Rangers instead.
There was a written contract. Actually it was the pre contract
agreement of it's era.


The entire crux of the matter was that MoJo & co. tried to dispute the fact that what he signed was a contract (it was written on a napkin).

FIFA ruled that it didn't matter what kind of paper or pen was used: it had dates, terms and relevant signatures and was therefore binding.

The Celtic board decided that, thus vindicated, they would not pursue the matter. I thought they were wrong.

With or without the agreement of Billy McNeill (and I have never seen anything indicating his feelings on their decision) it seemed to me to be an occasion on which to make a stand and to support a manager of the utmost integrity who had been humiliated by the whole sordid affair.
