Off topic post (not that much football gets discussed here at the moment)

Any IT savvy people in here point me towards a free file recovery program
for a hard disk that has had its directory deleted.

Have used a couple of trial programs that show that the files are still
on the drive but will not allow recovery until I part with substantial
payments to activate the trial version.

Any useful help apprieciated (and yes I know I should have backed it up).

1) *Important* Don't install data recovery software on the disk in
question. Installing software over the data you want to recover may
actually reduce your chance of recovery.
You should therefore load data recovery software onto another computer and
connect your disk as a slave device to that computer.

2) Best data recovery software I've used is GetDataBack by Runtime
Software. Alternatively, R-tools' R-studio. Both of them are pricey.
There are free alternatives but I've never found them much use.

If you still have problems mail me. *It is essential that you do not
install software on the disk in question, because the new software will
write itself onto sectors marked as deleted.*

Disk I am trying to recover from is linked to machine by an external power
supply and USB converter.
New hard drive in machine with a clean XP install. This will be the base I
recover to and install the recovery software on.
