A software firewall is essential as your hardware firewall will not
protect your PC from outgoing connections frm any nasty stuff that
might get on it.

any good ones you can recommend ?

Well AVG (Grisoft) have an Internet Suite that gets rated pretty highly. It has Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware, SPAM blocker & Firewall and it's cheap, you get 2 years updates for about £30.
Kapersky has what's considered the best Anti-Virus engine but for what it is worth I think the overall protection you'll get from AVG is better then just having Kapersky anti-virus on its own.

that's why I specified Kaspersky *Internet Security* -- the suite, not the antivirus.

As for AVG, it's rubbish.

*Ahem*.

Oh no it's not.

Are you still relying on a 9 month old report from av-comparatives to base your judgement on? I've already given you info regarding this in other threads.

No ... I'm relying on his latest, September report.

Take note of how poorly AVG does in the polymorphic tests, and of Clementi's view towards the end of the report that these are the real test of an antivirus program's worth.

please note also that the AVG program tested is the AVG anti-malware suite, not AVG Free or professional. This of course gives AVG an advantage over the other programs in that it is a combined antivirus-antispyware program. All other programs tested are antivirus only.
