We'll see. Liverpool *are* the greatest team for me - because my heart
tells me so. No one's argument will change that, statistics or no
statistics.
Exactly the point I was trying to make.
Most kopites would think the same had the club won absolutely nothing.
Which just goes to show that "support" and a feeling of belonging are the
two things most football fanatics give freely.

We all feel that our own club is the greatest, and rightly so.
Most people that post in here are long time fans and not plastic ones
that follow
teams with recent success.
Kids that grew up in the 70's and 80's would be impressed by
Liverpools dominance, and a lot would have turned to Everton during
their success in the 80's, and aren't the team that has had the
longest run in the top flight ?
United have picked up loads of fans for their undoubted success
through the 90's
and have remained strong since.
Arsenal have always travelled well, and under Wenger they have played
an exciting watchable brand of football, remember the boring boring
Arsenal under Graham.
Chelsea are more like the nouveux riche but would be building a strong
following,
because of their star studded lineup, but have had a long association
with top flight football.
As a Liverpool fan I would support my team if we went through what
Leeds fans are coping with now, because we all know there is something
really special about our club.

Good post apart from the this bit...

There you get it very wrong. United have had the best attendances in
England for the last 50 years, the 90s comment is almost insulting
except I realise you don't know any better.

I'm not talking about support on a local level.
English football is supported world wide, and success attracts more
fans.
I'm sure a lot of kids kickin a football around London for instance
would have been
sporting a Beckham top in the 90's, along with hoards of teeny bopper
girls,
with a fair share of them having Michael Owen.
I know that United were successful in the 50's and 60's, and there has
always been strong following of teams in the north, should we go back
to the early 1900's as well ?
I watched and cheered on United against Benfica in 68 ( I was only 7
and didn't know any better ), after Celtic had shown the way a year
earlier.
Interesting that there was only 32 teams in the comp there, and united
only had to play 4 home and away and the final to win it.
Against Hibs, Sarajevo, Gornik, Real Madrid
Attendances can also be based on the capacity of the stadium, and a
lot easier to squeeze more in on the terraces.
While we are talking of Europe - this from Uefa's website
Liverpool success
Liverpool FC's four victories between 1977 and 1984 deserve special
mention as the English club won its four trophies with essentially
different teams. The Reds' European pedigree shone brightly again in
2005 when they battled back from 3-0 down to defeat AC Milan on
penalties in what was perhaps the competition's most exciting and
memorable final.
