Harry Kewell made a successful return from injury as he came on after 62
minutes for Liverpool Reserves in their 1-0 defeat to his former club Leeds
United at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.
Kewell made his first appearance in a red shirt since the Champions League
final in Istanbul on May 25th. He played just off the lone striker in a
central role and came through without any problems.
The match itself was a disappointing affair as a spectacle but Liverpool
certainly created enough chances to force a draw with Godwin Antwi and David
Raven coming closest to finding an equaliser.
Paco Herrera and Hughie McAuley started with a back four of Zak Whitbread at
left back, Miki Roque and Danny O'Donnell at centre half with captain David
Raven at right back. Jack Hobbs partnered David Mannix in central midfield
with Adam Hammill on the left wing and Danny Guthrie right side midfield.
Austrian Besian Idrizaj played just off striker Ramon Calliste.
Liverpool started the game brightly and in the opening minute had a chance
from a David Mannix searching through ball but Leeds keeper Mark Wilberforce
was alert and came out to kick the ball clear just before Ramon Calliste
could get there.
Besian Idrizaj then came close to his first goal in a red shirt after 10
minutes. A sweet turn gave the 17-year-old a great chance but Wilberforce
made an excellent save to keep out his stinging drive.
Leeds then took the lead after 18 minutes. Paul Willis made a great save
from a free-kick but was let down by his defenders and after a poor
clearance, Simon Walton fired the loose ball into the net.
Willis then made a great save after 30 minutes with a fine save to deny
Jonathan Howson.
Three minutes later the Reds had a great chance. Good approach play from
Calliste set up Idrizaj who was blocked out before the ball came out to Adam
Hammill just outside the box, but the youngster could only curl an effort
over the bar.
Leeds almost added a second goal in stoppage time but Willis denied the away
side again with an excellent save from Kevin Smith.
For the second half Paco Herrera and Hughie McAuley made two changes. James
Smith came on at left back for Whitbread and Godwin Antwi came on for
Idrizaj. Antwi is a defender but was utilised in attack to support Calliste.
The Ghana born player certainly tries his best no matter what position he
has to play and did well and could easily have scored a couple of goals.
Godwin's best chance came after 57 minutes. Danny Guthrie did brilliantly
down the right and produced a superb cross which the diving Antwi narrowly
missed the ball with an attempted diving header.
Harry Kewell then made his comeback as a replacement for Adam Hammill and
had a chance straight away but could only shoot wide.
Antwi had another chance on 75 minutes but was denied by a save from
Wilberforce, then the Leeds keeper made an even better save to keep out
David Raven's long range shot.
Leeds almost made it 2-0 in the last minute when Howson hit a superb strike
that went inches wide.

Hobbs, Guthrie, Mannix, Calliste, Idrizaj (Antwi 45), Hammill (Kewell 62).
Unused subs: Lancaster, Peltier.
Leeds United Reserves: Wilberforce, Madden, Harding, Parker, Walton,
Marques, Gardner, Bayly, Smith, Howson, Pugh.
Referee: I Nolan.
Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the Match: David Raven. A solid game at right back,
just edges out the excellent Miki Roque.
