I don't think that's true. That progress is largely an illusion,
because when you put the entire team further back and basically arrange
for the midfield to play much more defensively, you're gonna get a
tighter team that's "better" in defense.
However, you're also gonna get a team that's more or less hopeless
going forward - which is what we got right now. Of course, this
situation is a combination of tactics and players (you can't play at
all with someone like Garcia in the team, because he keeps wasting,
wasting and wasting (did I mention wasting?) the ball no matter what
his position, and no matter how many team mates are near him). I
wouldn't mind playing so defensively if we had some sort of
counter-attacking plan (yes, like the old Arsenal), though.
But we don't. Which is why we didn't create one proper chance the
entire game, really.
I think Benitez is still struggling to get his head around both the
"physicality" and the pace of the Premiership, which seems to be the
case with players like Alonso, who was awful today, and Garcia, too.
