pulled their thoughts together and came up with:
Signed up with tiscali mid december from orange as i saw my
neighbour
was getting double the speed i was getting so am pleased with
that. Also small added bonus was they offered NG access as part of
the
deal which although i was happy with giganews does save £60 or so a
year. However i know some of these isp's use throttling during peak
hours but seems i can use NG's between about 7pm and
midnight.Anyone
else with tiscali having the same problem? Also found that you cant
really get any P2P software to work with them which is
annoying.Just
wondered if others here have had the same niggles and at a long
shot
any way around it (apart from rejoining another isp or giganews
again
of course).

I take it your broadband is through a router which you can go in and

configure manually?

I'm with BT, so I don't know your software-to-hub setup, but I
imagine
it'll be in your tiscali help documentation.

NOW .. what you want to do is set up a Dynamic IP address.
BT throttle P2P connections too, so I wanted a way around it and
changing
from the BT static IP to a free dynamic IP worked for me.

You'll need an update client (a tiny piece of software that runs in
the
background and updates your IP address every 30 mins or so) and a
free
account with a provider - I did a fair bit of research into it and
am
pretty sure I got the best provider.

Also for your P2P client, its a good idea to manually forward your
ports
so that the client is able to encrypt your traffic (so that your IP
doesnt
see it as P2P traffic and throttle it).

Now.. Linkage:

Smashing free Dynamic IP address provider:
http://www.dyndns.com
You'll need to read a lot to set it up, but it does talk you through
the
whole process step by step.
It will also point you in the direction of where to get the update
client
(I think it is their own software, and it too is free).

Step by step walkthrough on how to forward your ports for P2P
client:

Scroll down the list and find your make and model of router and then

follow the easy peasy instructions.

Cheers Biz,really appreciate you typing all that out.Yeah i tried a
few
things before posting here about it.Saw on one forum they were saying
do
port scans and forward to open ports etc but i couldnt find an open
port
(security wise great, downloading songs not so great) so ill sit down
tomorrow and try and get it all working. Thanks for all the good advice

again, doubt id have thought about the Dynamic IP route as i tried
doing that
with security cameras at my front door and back hosting on the net but
the
DIP thing just kept buggering about.

Cheers,

JB

I hear Sky now do a truly unlimited broadband package, no limits, no
throttling

Thing is im still hearing mixed things about sky, some say its excellent for
the price and some saying tis a nightmare (Mind you i guess all isp's are
the same, none are 100% recommended)but seems theres a fair few isps that
have gone down the true unlimited route only for it either to last a few
months or for them to have a rethink and put a sneaky cap in then play the
fair useage card.Cant say i have ever got anywhere near the max download
amount but still cant see how isp's are allowed to get away with calling
something unlimited but having a cap, should be listed as a package with the
highest amount listed rather than left for people to guess it.
