It's certainly important that a slow bowler be able to vary his

but surely variation in pace and spin are necessary for variations in
flight (in order to control the length).

Yes, but you don't need Hawkeye to tell you that *this* ball was
tossed up higher, *that* ball was the googly. The variations in pace are
a consequence of the other variations, not the cause of them.

As also is *not* varying them, to be able to lure batsmen
into a state of hypnosis.
I know which I'd prefer as striker ;o)

Then you haven't watched top-class spinners at work! Nearly
all the footage I've seen recently of [eg] Laker or Wardle consists
either of wickets or fours; whereas the real art came from the long
sequences of dot balls leading up to the wickets. On a helpful pitch,
they just spun and flighted more or less until the batsman made a
mistake; but on a good pitch, the mistake had to be induced, and
giving the batsman a false sense of security was a large part of that.
So sometimes you would see six balls all different; others you would
see five identical balls, and then the sixth would have the batsman
playing the same mechanical forward defensive to a ball that was
subtly different.

Yep, I'd be happy to see Panesar develop his craft, as you say, or for
Swan to *look* more the part (his results are good though). Playing
more games on less than perfect wickets and long boundaries would help.

Simply bowling more, even [or esp] on perfect wickets, would
help much more. Bowling in tandem with another good spinner, under a
captain who understands the art would help more.
