You conclude from the single example of one player's performance in
season that Ramprakash that his performance over a number of seasons
was greater than any of those of those in 1955. Moreover, it is a
meaningless stat without taking into account the strength of bowling,
state of the pitches etc. RH

Surely you must accept that, even making all due allowance for the
standard of bowling and pitches, to average over a hundred in two
successive seasons is an exceptional achievement. That is an average
something like three times the average runs per wicket in the
Championship this season. A batting average of three times the average
runs per wicket in the 1950s would be somewhere in the region of
seventy, which is about what May - the greatest batsman of the era -
managed in his best seasons. Obviously May proved his greatness at Test
level, which Ramprakash hasn't done, but considered purely as county
players it seems reasonable to say that they are comparable.

Your namesake Michael Henderson, normally a very severe critic, writing
in the Telegraph the other day called Ramprakash's performance
"majestic". Your reluctance to accord it any merit at all merely makes
you look mean-spirited. Would you have been so reluctant to praise it if
it had been achieved by a player meeting your definition of an
Englishman, I wonder?
