I seem to remember that English selectors used to always include a
home player for a Test, no matter how bad that player was. I am sure
Frankie Hayes benefitted from this when he was recalled at Old
Trafford in 1976. He scored 0 & 18. I can't really think of examples -
I may have to look through some old Playfairs - but I think it was
bowlers rather than batters that benefitted.
"Always" is much too strong a word, but I think there was a feeling that
players familiar with the ground might have a slight advantage. Back in
the 19th century, Surrey used to select the team for Tests played at The
Oval and Lancashire did so for Tests at Old Trafford, so you might find
four or five players from the "home" county in a team.
