Why on Earth did Harmison get a central contract and not e.g. Stuart
Broad or Tremlett?
I think it's because the feeling is that Harmison is not yet a busted
flush but that the only way in which he might return to being the
destructive bowler he (briefly) was is to handle him correctly and
that to do so requires the control over his career that a central
contract gives.
Exactly. If,even now, he needs a contract to motivate him to get fit in
all respects and bowl flat out for his country then it's a waste of
money and pretty tough on others with a better attitude and technique.
I don't think that that is necessarily fair. I'm not convinced that
the central contract has anything to do with motivating him, I think
it's that the selectors feel that he's still part of their plans
And, perhaps more importantly, they want to show him that he's still
part of their plans.
yes, but why?

Because the knowledge that people still believe and have confidence in
him is something that a character like Harmison desperately needs.

No, I meant why do people believe he is capable of producing the goods
on the field when he has been given plenty of opportunity and not
taken advantage of it. As I said, I don't believe Harmison's problems
are mental strength (particularly). He just has an action that is too
unstable, so unless he is absolutely right he will bowl too many bad
balls. The knowledge that people have confidence in him is not going
to fix that.
