My father's machine has picked up some nasty virus thingy. I was talking
to him on the phone and got him to fire up the VNC server on his machine
so I could go poke around things. He wanted to uninstall his (expired)
Norton virus stuff and ZoneAlarm and install the PCGuard stuff supplied
free by his ISP. So we duly went through that with a few reboots. Of
course, installing the new software with firewall defaults to blocking
everything, including the VNC server. Worse, it had the cheek to
classify it as spyware and delete it! Then it popped up windows saying
it can't delete some dodgy virus so I can't even fault-find it. Trying
to second-guess a program I've never seen over the phone is definitely
out. I half-seriously suggested he might like to try Linux instead,
it'll do everything he wants (mail, web, simple office apps, print). So
I think I'll work on that one. The only downside is that my nephew
probably won't be able to run his games on the machine, but as I suspect
he's the cause of the dodgy stuff anyway, I don't think that will be too
great a loss.
I can't remember whether I told you by email or posted it here, Dave, but I received an email purporting to be from "Jenny M" and also addressed to yourself, inviting us to check out her website.
My guard must have been down, because I fell for it, clicked on the 'video' on her 'site', and subsequently found that I had a Trojan virus, described only as a 'genetically' detected one by NAV when I submitted it to Symantec.com.
They had virus defs out for it a couple of days later, but by then IE had been Hi-Jacked to a site which was pushing anti-adware stuff every time I connected.
I could force it to Demon Home page by typing it in, but I was concerned that nasties were being planted, in spite of ZoneAlarm.
I started backing-up all my user stuff, and self-installed software to an external HDD, meanwhile running AdAware and Norton AV after every connection to the Internet. I expected to at least re-instal IE, but once I had the new defs, Norton found a bunch of Trojans (Zlob), and deleted them.
The Hi-Jacking stopped after I connected with the STOP button on ZA set, and did not recur after I released the stop.
One more warning was flashed up by Norton, of a high risk Trojan, which it deleted automatically, and things were back to normal, so I have no complaints about either Norton or Zonealarm, despite remarks elsewhere in this thread......
Whilst all this was going on I was doing stuff like Home banking on my old PC, which has McAffee, but I find that too sensitive, throwing up warnings on innocent .exe files.
At least it led me to buy a 250Gb HDD and take back-ups more seriously!
