Arctic Ice update
Going to be close, isn't it?

Overall, the ice is melting at a faster rate now, than compared to
this time last year. It's still about 0.75m sq km shy of where it was
at the end of July 2007, but just lay a straight edge along this
year's melting trend line and extrapolate it. If the ice continues to
melt at the same rate for the next 6 weeks, the 3m mark would be
achieved again at almost exactly the same time as last year - in the
3rd week of August. A new record would then be quite possible during
the next few weeks before widespread freezing starts again.
Lots of caveats, in terms of weather conditions and sea temperatures,
but it will be mightly close and a new record could be established as
easily as not.
NSIDC, measuring ice extent, paints a slaightly different picture:

However, no change in my odds. 4/5 a new record. Evens the 2007 record
stays intact.
