whenIt's all so very very sad that those days are gone. Just occasionally
fallsit snows hard I get an inkling of what it might have been like, but
enormousseldom last nowadays :-(
I don't get why is it all so sad?
It is only because we live in centrally heated houses which consume
quantities of energy to keep us warm creating a little microclimate thatwe
can reasonably tolerate such cold conditions without too muchinconvenience.
Go back 50 years or more and such cold weather would have brought muchthe
misery, especially to the poor and even death. The winter of 1947 was an
example which brought cold and hardship to many people.
Not only can it inflict problems on people, especially the most vulnerable
in society but also ravage our wildlife populations as well.
I was brought up in a poorly insulated house with no heating apart from a
gas fire in the living room. I remember the fir-tree patterns of ice on
inside of the single-glazed windows; the fact you had to get changedinfront
of the gas fire and then run like mad to your bed which had been warmed a
little by a hot water bottle; having a shower in a freezing bathroom,
everything remaining damp and not drying out; lying in bed in the morning
and building up courage to leave the warmth of it. It was bloody horrible!
I too lived in a cold house with no showers, but I don't recall ever hating
it, as a child I just couldn't wait to get dressed to get outside and play.
In fact we still live in what others would call a cold house (our bedroom is
never heated), but we just get on with it and don't waste valuable heating
oil unnecessarily. No problem. Scraping the car windscreen - no problem.
Driving on snow and ice - no problem. Not being able to get to work - no
problem. Why worry?
