After several days of alternating clear frosty weather and grey misty
cold,
today is somewhat different. After a sunny start there is a brisk
easterly
which is sending clouds scudding along. These are gathering at times in
a
manner which is much more suggestive of wintry showers off the North
Sea.
Temperature a bit warmer so far though at 4.4C, dew point 0.9C.
I wonder what might have caused that.
Withdrawal of the high pressure to the east introducing a more
easterly component to the flow. Cold continental air flowing over the
North Sea picks up moisture from the warmer North Sea at low levels,
leads to shallow convection over the sea and hence cloud is advected
inland off the North Sea in eastern districts? If we're lucky the
convection will be deep enough to give some wintry showers down the
east coast.
Even though the cloud is relatively low and warm, this infra red satellite
sequence shows the movement of this cloud. It also illustrates very well
why the term "blocking" is used for the high over Europe.
