Erm... why?
There seems to be some kind of a 'macho culture' on this
ng as to who can resist turning on their heating the longest
and who can keep their house the coldest.
Are you seriosly telling me that you are comfortable
getting up in sub 10C conditions and spending your
evenings at 13C?
Anything below 18C is chilly to me.
My brother is in the macho camp, has the CH on for a few hours in the
morning, when getting up. I cannot understand how anyone can be so
miserly.
Comfort is what I like. I find a temp below 19c chilly. The usual temps
in the living room is around 23c. The lowest it gets is 18c first thing
in the morning.
23C would be too warm for me, I prefer standard room temperature,
20/21C.
I think MOST people would agree. 21C is comfortable if all you're doing is
sitting watching TV or working on the PC.
I grew up in a house with nothing but open fires, and distinctly remember
waking up in cold winter mornings with ice on the INSIDE of the window. You
would think with that I would be acclimatised to cool rooms, not a bit of
it...!
Personally, I would much rather be in a comfortably warm room rather then be in
cool rooms and £20 in my pocket saved because of it. False economy, IMO.
Although I do like a cool bedroom, 18C....

Well said. Some sense among the penny-pinching
smugness. I too woke up often with ice on the inside of the windows
when I was young. It was not at all unusual in the winter. But I was
15 then and now I'm 65 so sod that for a lark. Cats have got the
right attitude; shivering is not a virtue. One good point that has
been made in this thread is that the temperature indoors should not be
as high in the winter as in summer, to allow for acclimatisation,
which doesn't take long. 19°C will do in the winter but in summer
it's more a case of keeping the temperature down, not up. On warm
summer nights with little wind I open the back door and all the
windows in my room upstairs and watch the circulation develop which is
strong enough to blow the flimsy curtains through the windows. It
lowers the temperature by a couple of degrees, say 26° to 24°, which
makes all the difference.

You are missing my point. I'm not shivering, and I'm not feeling smug.
It is just what I do. My heating comes on a couple of hours morning
and night, and I only turn it on during the day if I feel cold, not
because of what the thermometer says. If I can save money on my
heating bills, then I do.
I dont really mind what temperatures other people like to have in
their homes, but I would rather put on another jumper in a cold room,
than sit in a t-shirt in a warm room in winter, because I would feel
guilty that the energy that had been used to make me feel hot had
actually been wasted on me.
Today has been my coldest day of the year so far, with a max of 2.8C,
and the heating needs to be on most of the time here anyway today, to
keep the inside temperature at 17 or 18 C, as we have a large window
facing northeast.
