Re: Major change in the weather imminent now

Perhaps the more interesting question is what awaits in the wings... After
next week as we head towards December.. Here's my guess.

This has been the interlude, or gentle opening prelude with it's buckled
jet stream. Scandinavia has seen the brunt of the colder weather entrained
in the lows which have stalled there. But there has been no sign of a
Scandinavian high of significance, and the jet stream though disrupted for
now has been strong and to the north.

It's not born of pessimism, more realism I would argue, that once the USA
cools then the jet stream will once again with renewed force make it's way
right across us and deep into Europe. It's only a matter of time IMHO. I
can see nothing of the mechanics which at one time led to cold Winters in
the UK, I think those days are a long way off returning, though I would
never rule out the power of nature to surprise us with some kind of
thermostatic response of which we may not be currently fully aware.

So my guess is that we pin our hope once more of snow on some northerly
outbreaks with a secondary depression coming across the southern UK and
giving a little snow excitement later in the Winter.

Thanks to all who make this group such a diverse and fascinating daily
read.

Cheers

Nice post James. I wonder how many factors we do need to get a cold winter.
Ideal synoptics, colder SST's than recent winters, colder temperatures in
Europe, favourable ocean currents further afield and so on. I suppose there
will always be signs of one or two of these things from time to time but
recent history makes these a sought after commodity. (By some) I don't
particularly think what happens now has much effect on, say our January
weather and end up going with the Met Office view which I suppose is based
on similar thinking to yours. But of course with the weather we can all be
wrong................
