I notice that poor Charlwood is suffering from medium level cloud,
after overnight mist, as it has most days for the last few months as
per the Met Off Site. One wonders why they just do not subsitute this
for N/A rather than continuing to report "duff" data? or perhaps
Charlwood has a unique micro-climate? ;-)

I raised an enquiry with the Met Office on 23 July about similar duff data
for the so-called South Farnborough site, as follows:

"Hello

Can you please explain why the weather reports from South Farnborough nearly
always show clear skies? See
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/se/south_farnborough_latest_weather.html.

These reports are clearly quite wrong, especially for last Friday morning
and this afternoon, and surely it is better to provide no information than
misinformation.

Best regards"

The periods in question were exceptionally wet, yet the weather reports
showed continuous sunshine. I received the following reply:

"Thank you for your feedback regarding observations from South Farnborough
displayed on the â??latest/recent pastâ?? pages of the Met Office web site.

As is noted on these pages, observations are subject to final quality
control checks after publication on this web site. However, you would
reasonably expect observations of present weather to be consistent with that
experienced at the location in question.

Whilst we are confident that the vast majority of observation reports on our
web site are reliable, in a few cases there appears to be an issue with the
way the data is transferred into the web pages for the particular stations.
These are under investigation by colleagues.

We are grateful for your feedback and would like to thank you for taking the
time to contact us.

Yours sincerely

Martin Kidds

Met Office"

I am not sure how the nature of the weather is deduced by these automatic
stations, but it appears that "South Farnborough" is not the only one having
problems.
