Jay Winn did the other night. I think it is a terrible idea to introduce another metric into a confused public who have either an inches or mm mindset.
To me, that is like saying that people who think in inches will not understand 'tenths', or 'thou' when of course, they do.
Millimetres and centimetres are part of the same metric - the standard metre - being 'thou' and 'hundredths' respectively.
Trying to use two systems (imperial and metric) at the same time is the most confusing thing - one should be chosen and then adhered to - it does not matter which.
Is it the Aussies or NZers who (used to) use "points" for rainfall? I
remember much mirth in the office back in the day when a student on
secondment, of vaguely remembered antipodean nationality, used the
term, and we misunderstood it for "pints" of rain.
IIRC a "point" was a tenth of an inch.
I have not heard that before.
With the benefit of your explanation, it does make a certain sense with a tenth being a (decimal) point fraction of an inch.
(My daughter lives in NZ - I try to remember to ask.)
