What's it to be?
Well, sat here in a VERY wet Folkestone the thought occurs that both would
be right in a warming environment.
The south polar region is a desert. Very low precip. at the best of times.
But what is there falls as ice and builds ice shelves, glaciers and the
rest. Now, warm the sea up a little. The tips of glaciers reaching out into
a warmer water melt faster and shrink. The warmth (well, it's all relative,
perhaps less cold would be closer) helps to lubricate the bottom of the
glacier and this will speed up melting at the bottom. The same happens to
the ice shelves, thinning and breaking up.
Then think about the catchment areas closer inland. Warmer air, warmed by
the surrounding sea, carries more moisture, more precip and you get a
quicker build up of ice. More layers addd on the ice pack and more to feed
the glaciers. All this happening with a lot more energy in the atmosphere.
So precipitation events increase in frequency and volume. It's a system
waking up, lots of slightly warmer, more mobile ice feeding the speeding up
glaciers to melt in the sea. More layers of ice on the ice shelves, not as
cold as before, pushing all that ancient ice deeper into the sea to melt
faster.
It seems to me that this is a transitional phase. The whole system creaking
into life as the extra energy in the system changes everything...
