Sun Halo

Hi All
While sitting on the beach at Cayton Bay south of Scarborough around midday today I observed a near-complete 22 degree sun halo with a distinct red inner edge merging into blue. It lasted for around an hour until cloud cover increased. The wind was a moderate, cool northeasterly.
A fine sight and my question is: are these rare events? It's the first I've seen in my near 50 years despite being an 'outdoor type'.
