Not-adiabatic cooling




Can anyone explain why the temperature in the Highlands drops off
faster with height than mere adiabatic cooling would imply? My
guess is that it is due to the mountains causing turbulence and
mixing higher air with lower.

What I mean is that places at 1,000-1,500 feet are more than 2-3
degrees Celcius colder than near sea level, fairly systematically.
