21:43 18Nov2005 UPDATE 1-Tropical Storm Gamma forms in western Caribbean-NHC
(Adds position, wind speed, other details)
NEW YORK, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Gamma has formed in the
western Caribbean Sea off the coast of Honduras, the U.S. National Hurricane
Center said in an advisory Friday.
Gamma is the 24th named storm in the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic
hurricane season.
In its 4 p.m. EST (2100 GMT) advisory, NHC said the poorly defined
center of the storm was located about 40 miles north of Limon, Honduras, and
about 190 miles east-southeast of Belize City, Belize.
Gamma is moving toward the west-northwest at 5 mph, with maximum
sustained winds near 40 mph. Some slow strengthening is expected over the
next 24 hours, but NHC does not expect Gamma to gain hurricane strength over
the next five days.
Computer models show the storm turning northward and grazing Mexico's
eastern Yucatan Peninsula, then heading northeast towards Cuba and/or
southern Florida by Monday.
An intermediate advisory will be issued at 7 p.m. EST.
