Exceptional cold spells

I was looking through my Cheltenham weather archive, and my attention
was drawn to January 1881.
Av.Max 1.2°, Av.Min -6.3°, and the mean temperature for the week from
15th-21st was -8.1°C!
The temperature stayed continuously below freezing, day & night from the
12th to the 22nd, and for the 19 days between the 8th & 26th, the
temperature never went above +1.4°C.
On the 20th, the temperature fell to -19.6°C.
Oh for a spell like that now...
