Sorry, my camera isn't an SLR so I am stuck with the lens I have.
That is the key to doing better. What you have already is not bad for an 80mm zoom lens.
Everything is a compromise. One of the requirements we had is that everything we need must be able to fit in a fanny pack. :-) Except for a few issues, I m quite happy with my camera.

You could try afocal photography through a pair of binoculars or a small telescope. That will get you a fair improvement in the raw image size.
It is a pain to set up but with LCD preview it is quite possible.
I'll have to see if I can borrow something.
