"Real" experts are hard to get if you leave things to the last minute, so
you have to makedo and mend.
I found several recorded phone messages from radio and TV people when I got
to the University of London Observatory yesterday afternoon (I had been home
doing a pile of marking). All of them were received after 1pm (when our
receptionist leaves-she is only employed part-time) and they wanted to
either (a) have me travel to their studios for an interview on the "high
moon" or (b) visit the observatory and film it for news broadcast the same
evening.
We were not able to accommodate any of this at such short notice, and it
would have disrupted planned teaching. The general conclusion from this and
other experiences is that most media people seem to have no mental picture
of the concept of "planning in advance", nor do they consider that not
everyone they approach is able to drop all other planned activities at a
moment's notice just becasue they might appear on TV or radio.
It's not as if this wasn't something predicted, literally, well in advance.
