As a novice I would like to know the absolute minimum power a camera would need to have to take shots of planets, with say the ability to capture the rings of Saturn. I fear that my Tesco Disposable isn't up to scratch. Thanks in advance - Dave B
It isn't the camera that matters so much as the telescope.
You could in principle take afocal pictures through a telescope using your Tesco disposable camera and get decent results, but you would need to make a cunning jig to align it. It could be done, but a slightly better camera would be a lot easier. A relatively cheap webcam with the right software can get fantastic results on the planets.
You really need a through the lens SLR film camera or digicam with a realtime LCD viewfinder showing what the sensor is seeing to get good results (webcams fit under the latter category).
