I went there in the early 1990s and it was worth the trip. At that time it
opened to the public on Wedneday nights. You can take a funicular up the
hill to the observatory.
It reminded me of star parties at my local astronomical society - slightly
disorganised but lots of enthusiasm. I'm sure it's more professional now. I
did get to look at the planets through a large telescope but was eventually
removed (politely) by a couple of students who were doing some serious
observing.
