I once tried a true-to-life colour balancing of M42 using a nearby
reference star to set the relative intensities in RGB and IR. Of course
this required the full complement of darks and flats for accuracy (so
it was a lot of work). The end result looked almost B&W! Was it
accurate? Yes. Was it a pleasing result? No! In the end I had to crank
up saturation by a good 200% before I was "happy" with the final
image...
I'd guess colour balancing the planets to be an even more subjective
exercise. So how's it done? And would we "like" the results anyway?
Cheers
