My knowledge of Dobs and mounting the OTA on a tripod is limited to what
I've read and seen done (see below). I'm sure there are other people on here
who could be more helpful than myself... Hint... Hint! ;o)
But I'd definately ask when buying it. I think that most *can* be mounted on
a tripod at a later date unless part of the dobsonian mount is actually part
of the optical tube assembly, as in built into it.
To fit an and OTA on a tripod though, you do need a tripod, a mount, a
cradle for the OTA which attaches to the mount and you may need to buy
counterbalance weights if they don't come with the mount.
A couple of mates of mine have dobs that they bought years ago with the idea
of getting a tripod but they "never got around to it". One of them has the
same OTA as mine (bought second hand without the mount and tripod - really
cheaply) and then mounted in a custom made dobsonion mount (plenty of
diagrams on the 'net). A lot of people swear by dobs for their ease of use
and quick setup.
