Thanks for the pointer Les - I think you're right. In fact coronas
probably explain both the small halo and the larger "filled in" disk I
saw at full moon.

The fourth image from the bottom looks most like the halo I saw last
night, although to the eye the moon wasn't overexposed making the ring
more definite.
