Ian,
Unfortunately, I have to agree that this is probably nothing more
than a cloud or some CCD effects. I checked the images for changes in
the cloud structure, to use as a comparison to changes near the sun,
but didn't notice anything that poked me in the eye. (Did anyone
else look for changes in cloud structure away from the sun?) It seems
like the changes seen in the images are consistent with the changes in
the larger cloud structure. You did a great job on the animated gif,
but it looks like more support for the cloud theory.
On the other hand this would be such a cool observation that I'm
not ready to give up just yet. If you know the time and date that the
pictures were taken, then you should be able to find some professional
observations at the Virtual Solar Observatory (VSO):
http://vso.nascom.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/search
My advice is: grab some coronal observations there and compare what
you are seeing in the picture to what was observed by one of the
instruments there. (If nothing else, SOHO should have something there.)
If you have any trouble with finding something or with your
comparisons, post the dates and I'll be glad to help you out.
JD
