Shopping for astro-capable digicam

Hi Guys,
I am ditching my 3.1Mp Kodak digicam. The longest night exposure it
can take is 4 seconds.
I am looking at 5-6Mp digicams capable of longer exposures. I am
looking at doing afocal imaging but you can also tell me of your
experience with digital SLRs. D-SLRs are probably out of my budget. Is
it better to go for an x3 or optical zoom?
