Hi,
I'm a newbie too, I can tell you my experiences. With a standard webcam you
can easily do the planets, Moon and Sun (with suitable filter, of course).
Simply replace the webcam lens with a nose-piece adapter and insert it into
the eyepiece holder. You can then take short avi files using the same
software that came with the webcam and process them with programs like
Registax or Iris. Try different webcam settings to get the best results. A
good barlow could also be of help, as well as an IR-Cut filter.
If you are interested in deep sky objects, then you need a modified webcam,
able to take long-exposures. There are several websites dealing with these
modifications, see for example http://www.antareslegnano.org/webcam for some
shots and for link to modified-webcams sites. I and my friends use Astrosnap
to perform the long-exposures and to control the telescope (guiding and so
on).

I regularly use a 5 meters USB cable without any trouble.
