Never heard ordination described as 'self-elected' before.
I don't know of ANY religion where the priests get elected by a
ballot. Um, except the Pope, I suppose.
"Self elected" seems acceptable wording to me. Anyone can start a coven
and call themselves a High Priest or High Priestess (that part of the
article was specifically referring to Wicca). AS distince from most
branches of Christianity and Judaism where already established members
(not necessarily clergy) determine ordination and status.
AS Jani implies, this does not prevent exploitation and abuse. But there
is usually a structure for complaining about this, even if the
complaints often get ignored.
