Ho hum. I did see a badly-felled tree
that took out some 'archaeology', but that's a different
story. <g>
*G, makes a difference from a JCB I suppose.
I think the council are embarassed. Some teen or other had
left a note pinned to the safety fence round the whole mess
(this is also right next to the kiddy playground in the park)
bemoaning the fact that they'd cut the tree down because
someone broke the icehouse roof - obviously they didn't know
that the tree was felled *before* the roof broke... <g>
Effect and cause? :~)
Don't
know why they cut it down, but it's a bad job, there's a ten
foot high stump there now and a big hole in the canopy.
Seems strange to leave such a large stump.

But eek they don't tend to grow as straight! <g> Haven't
seen much in the way of Scots Pine planting hereabouts,
it's all Sitka and Norway Spruce, so I'm told.
Scots Pine is particularly Red Squirrel friendly though.
Which reminds me of the aims of the Ayr Gorge group, to plant
more native broadleaved trees and to encourage red squirrels
back to the area. Erm... <g>
The will live in deciduous woodland and used to across most of England and
Wales, but the Grey thrives in that habitat. Given the choice Reds go for
Scots Pine forestry. I wonder if this is another case of English decision
makers in posts North of the border. (and the wrong local knowledge).
The grow fairly straight at lower altitudes and in sheltered
locations, though with much forestry production going into
manufactured wood (chipboard, mdf and the like) I wonder if
straightness is as much of a criteria as it used to be.
Good point. I imagine straight trees are still easier to use
machinery on; they're certainly easier to fell and deal with
using a chainsaw.
Especially the sort of chainsaws they use now
