Reading the news, I see that Trinny and Susannah have managed
to upset The Council of British Druid Orders by filming part
of a programme at the Long Man of Wilmington. And I can see
their point because frankly I'd be upset if they decided to
film anywhere near me, but I suspect my reasons are different
to theirs.
Assuming they didn't do any damage and got the relevant permissions, I don't
see a major problem.
Anyway, if you read the BBC version
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/sussex/6263032.stm)
you'll see they have quoted the CoBDO as saying their main
objection is that it would "dishonour an ancient Pagan site
of worship".
Now, I'm more than happy with the CoBDO viewing the site as
sacred because in my opinion sacred doesn't necessarily mean
old, but ancient Pagan site of worship?
I'd agree with that.
I do wonder what the CoBDOs view on tourists is, since I doubt they'd see it
as anything other than a tourist attraction.
I do wonder what Trinny and Sussanah did that was regarded as desecration or
dishonourable.
The official Sussex Archaeological Society who own the site
seem to be under the impression that the earliest we can say
for sure that the Long Man existed is 1710.
There is no evidence to suggest he's either ancient or pagan
in origin.
And tbf no evidence to say its not, but to be equally fair there is no
evidence that any group involved in the creation used it as a sacred space
or for any other purpose, nor that has there been long term use with any
single purpose other than a curiosity or tourist attraction.
I can think of lots of reasons to object to T&S having 100+
volunteers tromping round a site of natural beauty for a
cheap tv stunt, but inventing a history that there is no
evidence for is not one of them.
I do hope that anyone visiting the site would do so respectfully, but that
hope applies to any site.
