I was at Arbor Low last weekend and there were a number of symbols
painted at each quarter in chalk/lime of the type used to mark football
pitches.
In the east, were 4 separate symbols, one looked like the symbol for
Taurus, another for Pisces. The other two, I did not recognise.
On the north quarter was the 3 armed cross adopted by the the Free
French
during WW2, and (I think) Thee Temple ov Psychik Youth. (The Cross of
Aquitaine?)
I can't remember exactly what had been painted on the other quarters,
but I do remember one which was a circle spiralling outwards, giving a
sort of Catherine Wheel effect.
There was also a yellow rose laying on each of the nine stones. These
were unopened and past their best, but still comparatively 'alive'.
The various designs were specifically on each quarter and were symbols
rather than random grafitti. Given the state of the roses, I speculate
that there may have been a ritual/celebration carried out at Spring
Equinox. However, there was no indication of how long the chalk symbols
had been there for.
Do any of you have any insights as to the significance of the symbols
or roses, or idea who might be responsible?
