Admittedly civil service management might not deserve a penny that get, but the ones who are on the front line taking crap on a daily basis deserve double what they get!

Most of them deserve to be fired.

why?
someone after you for child maintanance?
and you would prefer your taxes to go to the unemployed?
I know I rather my taxes didn't.

The civil service gravy train is the more expensive option.

Thanks for making my point for me - on a personal level, working for the civil service is expensive for me, on a psycho-emotional level. And I know it is this way for many people who work for the government.

Poor you. Maybe the govt can hire a few thousand counsellors to soothe you, at more expense. Then they too can whine on about what a *** job they do, unlike us 'outsiders' who have it so cushy.

<reads carefully> Where did Kath say anything about 'cushy'?

What would you put in place of the civil service then? And why do you
have such a huge grudge against it all? Perhaps you'll accuse me of
bais, because of my previously stated family links, or perhaps I am
looking at the whole situation from a wider perspective? What do you
think of when you think 'civil service'?

I would privatise almost the entire govt bureaucracy with the exceptions of those arms of govt concerned with exercising physical coercion eg police, military etc.
Various companies can tender to do the work for the least money in free(ish) market conditions. That would include everything from the NHS to social services to penpushing in the town hall.
