I'd forgotten all about Shirley Ghostman! For people who don't know,
this was a programme on BBC3 where a comedian called Mark something
pretended to be the disturbed and sexually ambiguous psychic Mr
Shirley Ghostman, with long blond hair and a white suit. It was a bit
like Ali G, where he was sending up gullible members of the public.
But it made a serious point, in a way. Scientists are just as likely
to be fooled by conjuring tricks and "cold reading" as anyone else. It
will be interesting to see what the documentary has to say about it.
