Sadly true though possibly due to mental illness rather than a

Yes, that's certainly true in my friend's case; however, he can't even
*conceive* of somewhere "better", other than non-existence. I do pray
that that will change some day for him.

Most people can't even get through 2 minutes without looking for something
to do, something to occupy their bodies and/or their minds. What would you
do in an existence that lasted for all eternity? With an infinity of time,
you'd have to do every possible thing an infinite number of times and be
infinitely bored, with no possibility of relief. It would be torture.

Also, how could you possibly be happy, or content, or peaceful, without lack
of happiness, or contentment, or peace, to contrast it with (which surely
cannot be part of an idyllic existence)? You'd have to spend all of
eternity in a completely unchanging state of being exactly neutral in every
respect. In fact, it's hard to see how you could have any thoughts or
feelings at all. It would be rather like... well, rather like
non-existence, actually :-) Some theists argue that the only state in
which we could possibly bear spending the rest of eternity is complete
oblivion, which as far as atheists are concerned, is what will happen
anyway.

Discuss... :-)
