Reflections on Hijab ban in Muslim Turkey and a Hijab ‘revolution’ in
the Liberal West Secular Muslims are welcoming the decision of the
Constitutional Court of Turkey to disallow the lifting of the ban on
hijabs as a significant triumph for secularism over repressive
Islamist practices. The court recently ruled that amendments to the
constitution by the ruling AKP to permit hijabs in universities, would
amount to rendering "non-functional the basic features of the
republic." At the core of this decision is the realization that the
hijab continues to be a tool of oppression for Muslim women, severely
restricting their right to express their faith in their own unique and
personal way, writes Farzana Hassan, a Canadian Muslim woman activist
and writer. At the same time a website Islamic Insights reflects on
the "Hijab Revolution" in the Liberal West, asking if the hijab in the

The Tragic Illusion of the Islamic State by Tarek Fatah
Tarek Fatah, a well-known leftist student leader of Karachi in the
late 1960s and early 1970s, now lives in Canada and has come up with a
well-researched book which demolishes brick by brick the many myths
regarding the existence of an Islamic state. Fatah’s basic thesis is
that there is no concept of an Islamic state in Islam, there is no
existing Islamic state in the world, and there never was. While this
has drawn considerable interest among intellectual circles, author
Fatah has received threats as well, says Babar Ayaz in his review.
