Like Dr Johnson, my response was to say "I refute it thus!"[1] stamping
my foot, and I went off Eddison as a popularist.

Except that I don't think you have refuted it! As I understand it,
Eddison is exactly right - the distance between nucleus and electrons
is comparable to the distance from sun to planets. I don't agree that
it makes walking difficult - except perhaps in the sense of the
centipede in the ditch.
