What you have just told me is, in effect, that since I have not
been convinced by the arguments of Christians it follows that I
am so unfixably opposed to all that is truly good that it's right
and just and proper that I should be consigned to a fate worse
than any that ever befalls anyone here on earth. You are, of
course, entitled to believe that, but it would be a pity if
you were able to regard that as a generous, positive, merciful
way of thinking; it is quite the reverse.

Hang on, Gareth; I think you are being a trifle unfair here.

Claire said that in her opinion, the suffering of hell was not fire or
intense cold or anything like that, but that it was being separated
from God. You, however, are insisting on debating with her in terms of
a hell of eternal torment.

Presumably, seeing as you have chosen to separate yourself from God in
this life, you don't regard that as a terrible thing, so why are you
getting het up about the prospect of remaining separated in the
afterlife?

Personally, I disagree with Claire; I think hell will be a very
painful place (though of limited duration). If you wished adopt
towards me the attitude you express above that would be fair enough,
but don't attribute to Claire ideas in which she has said she does not
believe.

God bless,
