I quite understand but... don't those who give up their liberties for
safety deserve and receive neither liberty nor safety?
If I gave up all my liberties then the catchphrase which you are
quoting might be true. In fact we all make compromises between
absolute liberty and absolute safety and I think that having CCTV in
high risk locations is an acceptable compromise. *I* have no
objection to being watched by an 18-year old of low IQ while I walk
from my car to Woolworths and am comforted by the knowledge that if I
am attacked, the tape will be available to the police as an aid in
tracking down my attacker.
Ken, in response to a post I sent a while back, someone came back with the
following:-
In fairness, he's probably just repeating a slogan he's heard -- I've
certainly heard that one before. We all do this. But we need to make
ourselves question things that pop into our heads. US correspondent
William Shirer, in his "Berlin Diary" (in the war, before the US
entered WW2), commented how he would hear educated-looking Germans
uttering bits of nonsense which they were clearly parrotting off the
Goebbells-controlled radio. (He also records how as things went on
the Germans began to realise that they were being lied to).
Oddly, I can't remember who said it.
If you tell me that you don't understand the different between
intelligent quotation and mindless parotting, of course I believe you.
All the best,
Roger Pearse
