It may be worth mentioning that the many of the

There is an important difference between cultures whose religions
demand
death for humans supposed guilty of grave crimes, and cultures whose
religions
demand the continual death of innocent humans purely to satisfy the
Gods.
Hmm. I suspect that the real reason in both cases was precisely the
same: to maintain, through terror, priestly ascendancy and church
power. It doesn't really matter, particularly to the vctims, whether
the selection criterion is "being young and pretty" or "being old and
warty".
Anywa, don't Opus Dei believe that god is only happy if innocent
people tie barbed wire round themselves and indulge in a spot of
whipping?

PS I can just imagine an Aztec reaction to christianity. "My dears,
they claim a peace loving god, but the symbol of their faith is man
being tortured to death. Our priests may be a bit quick with the old
obsidian knife, but at least they keep it in its place, and don't
stick carvings of the act in every primary classroom. Then, just to
make matters worse, they re so obsessed with blood that once a week
their priest turns bread and wine into flesh and blood (of a god, no
less!) and everybody eats it. Yes, really. Ritual cannibalism. What a
bunch of savages. Another cup of xoacolatl?""
