But _belief_ in something that we equate to "god the father" predates
belief in "god the son", or does it?
If the Jews believed in a messiah, did they expect that future messiah
to be the Son, and if so with the same semantics as Christians believe
of Jesus?
The Jewish Messiah is appointed (and anointed) by God but is otherwise
purely human. He is a son of God in the same way that all of us are
God's children, no more, no less.
I thought it was generally accepted (by Christian scholars, I mean) that the biblical title 'Son of God' refers to the divinely appointed kingship of the Messiah: it is a royal title. (But I agree that it doesn't in itself mean that the Messiah is more than human.)
(I hope no one thinks I am denying that Jesus is the incarnate Son of God in the Trinitarian sense.)
