Psalm 14

It is radical misuse of scripture using a paraphrase ('The Living
Bible') meant for children and produced by someone who had no claims to
be a theologian or a scholar. A proper translation would read something
like:

'The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt,
they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.'

The connection between the two parts of the verse is difficult to make,
since the subject of the first sentence is 'the fool' and that of the
second 'they', and multiple interpretations of the psalm are possible.
Some scripture is just hard, and 'dumbing it down' does no-one a
service. What you may be sure of is that the psalmist did not have the
modern atheist in mind.

That's an interesting point. I'm inclined to the opinion that most
English translations have the quote marks in the wrong place. I have a
feeling it should be punctuated like this:

The fool hath said in his heart, "There is no God. They are corrupt,
they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good."

I think that this is a pretty good representation of the beliefs of
many who reject God because of the perceived actions of some who claim
to follow God. And I would agree with the Psalmist that this is a
foolish choice.
